Inhabit waters of India, Malay Archipelago. Kalimantan and Sumatra islands. American ichthvologists classify Barbs into three additional! genera: Barbodes (2 pairs of barbels. 25 to 30 scales in lateral line), Capoeta (1 pair of barbels, less than 30 scales) and Puntius (barbeis are absent, usually no more than 30 scales). Males brighter and slimmer than females. Sexually mature at 8 to 15 months. intermittent spawning. Phytophils. Fecundity up to 2,000 eggs (usually 500—800 eggs). All Barbs actively eat their own eggs and fry. Spawning grids, high quantity of substratum and diffused lighting are used to protect the eggs and ihe juveniles. Spawners must be removed from the tank right after the breeding. Care, breeding and feeding are common for the genus.
