Varicorhinus sp. aethiopicus.
Inhabit rivers of Western Africa. Only 20 species among more than 100 species of African Barbs are kept in aquaria. Smallest species: B. jai, B. hulstaerti and B. wóhlerti—3 to 3.5 cm. Females larger, stouter and more colourless than males. Food: plankton, benthos, filamentous green algae, etc. Sexually mature at 8 to 10 months. Intermittent spawning, in the morning, among water plants. Tank dimensions: 50x30x30 cm. Fecundity up to 700 eggs (200 to 300 usually). Incubation period 18 to 25 hours, 2 to 3 days later the young start swimming and feeding on rotifers, etc. Ethiopian Barb is very close to true Barbs. Vegetarian species. Care: dH to 15°, pH 6.5-7.5, temperature, 22 to 28° C, aeration, filtration, replacement of Watcr.
