Family Characins — Characidae
Inhabit the Amazon basin. There is a longitudinal luminous bar in colouring of all Neon Tetras (spots on H. ocellifer). Size up to 4 cm. Males more slender. Live food of suitable size. Care of adult fishes, as well as breeding and feeding of juveniles, is the same for all Neon Tetras, but harder water can be used for spawning — up to 3 to 4°, pH 6.0—6.4, temperature 26 to 27° C. Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus), species endemical to Essequibo (Guiana), with its red luminous stripe, resembles Neon Tetras.
