Family African Tetras — (Alestidae)
Inhabit the rivers of West Africa, the Congo basin, as well as the Nile, Niger, Zambezi. Males more slender, brighter coloured, have elongated dorsal fin and quite often fanciful caudal filaments. Size up to 8 to 15 cm. Food: zooplankton. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 8 to 14 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 300—500 eggs. Spawning behaviour is stimulated by bright solar or artificial light, water softening to 2 to 4° with pH 6.0—6.4, sometimes with addition of salt to 0.5—1.5 g per 1 1. Temperature optimum 26 to 27°C. Juveniles should be fed in 6 days after spawning with rotifers, naupIn, etc. Niger Tetra (Arnoldichthys spilopterus) and Brycinus chaperi (top right on the upper photo) are also kept in tanks.
