Inhabit the Amazon basin. Genus Leporinus is composed of about 60 species, classified according to their colouring (cross-striped, spotted, with longitudinal bars, etc). Males more slender, brighter coloured. Size up to 35 cm, in captivity usually smaller. Food: 70% vegetable and 30% animal. Care as for all Characoids. Captive breedings are known. Fecundity may reach several
hundred and even thousand eggs. Close genera: Leporellus, Schizodon.
