1. Inhabit the Amazon delta (H. rhodostomus), Peru inland waters (P. georgiae). Males more slender, colour pattern more contrasting. Grow to 4.5—5 cm. Care and breeding as for Neon Tetras. May be shocked by abrupt change of conditions, so need gradual adaptation when changing tanks.
2. Inhabit the waters of Peru, Venezuela and Brazil (Orinoco, Rio Negro, Rio Putumayo, etc.). Males more slender. Males and females have almost the same colouring. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 5 to 10 months. Spawning in pairs, but also possible in schools (P. axelrodi). Doubly distilled water is better for breeding, DH 0—0.2°, pH 5.0—5.8, temperature 23 to 26°C. The eggs should be shaded. Incubation period 24 hours. Feeding commences, with smallest plankton. Close species
(according to S. H. Weitzman & W. L. Fink, 1983) Paracheirodon simulans.
