15. TWO-SPOTTED ASTYANAX (Astyanax bimaculatus)

Family Characins (Characidae)
Inhabit the subtropical and tropical waters of America. More than 70 species of these silvery fishes up to 20 cm (3.5 to 10 cm usually) are known. Mexico Blind Cavefishes (A. fasciatus mexicanus) inhabit subterranean reservoirs of Mexico. Males more slender. Fishes are hardy as regards chemical water composition, and also omnivorous. Sexually mature at 8 to 12 months.
Spawning in pairs. Incubation period 2 to 3 days at 18 to 20°C. The fry start swimming and feeding on the sixth day. Feeding commences with rotifers, etc.
Buenos Aires Tetra (Hemigrammus caudovittatus), originating from the La Plata basin, is similar in form, care and breeding to Astyanax. An albino form of Buenos Aires Tetra is known (leftupper photo).
