Inhabit the Amazon basin (Rio Meta, Rio Maroni, etc.). Ten species are described. Characteristic features of the colouring: black spots with border behind gill covers at eye level. Size up to 3—4.5 cm. Males more slender, with higher dorsal fin. Food: Cyclops, Daphnia, etc. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 6 to 10 months. When they are breeding, it is very important to assure low carbonate hardness KH< 3° pH 5.5—6.0. Juveniles start swimming on the fifth day. Fecundity up to
300 eggs. Feeding commences with smallest plankton. Hyphessobrycon callistus (left, upper photo) resembles Phantom Tetras in colouring.
