1. Inhabit the waters of Central and South America. The body is elongated, silvery colouring, with black spot on caudal fin base. Size up to 30 cm and more. Predators. Sexually mature at the second year of life. Spawning in pairs. Not demanding as regards water composition. Fecundity up to 1,000 eggs and more. Incubation period 20 hours at 27°C. Feeding of juveniles commences on third day. The young should be fed with rotifers, Cyclops nauplii, Artemia, etc. Close species to the genus Boulengerella.
2. Inhabit the Amazon basin. The body is deep and silvery with black ocellus on caudal fin base. Males more slender and brighter. Size up to 8 cm. Food: blood- and glass-worms, etc. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 8 to 12 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity 1,000 eggs and more. Incubation period 24 to 30 hours. Close species: Poptella orbicularis grows to 12 cm (lower photo at the top).
