Pterophyllum scalare (Angelfish) inhabits the Amazon River basin. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1928. The male iS more massive, with a big forehead. Seven basic colour forms are known: striped, twin-coloured, blue, golden, black, smoke-coloured, marbled with plain and veiled fins. Length, 15 to 20 cm. Live food of all kinds. Sexually mature at 10 to 12 months. Spawning
in pairs. Fecundity up to 1,000 eggs. Incubation period 2 to 3 days; in 5 days the fry start swimming and feeding on small plankton and also on mucus secretion from the skin of the parents. Water conditions: dGH to 15°, pH 6.4—7.5, temperatures 24 to 28°C, aeration and filtration. Hybridization between different types of the Species presents no difficulties.
