Symphysodon aequifasciata (Discus) inhabits the Amazon River basin. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1962. The colouration is brown-ish-yellow with dark cross and emerald longitudinal stripes. Silver, turquoise and red local and selective
forms are known. The male is larger and with a prominent forehead. Length, 15 to 20 cm. Live food of all kinds. Sexually mature at 15 to 18 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 200 to 400 eggs. Incubation period 3 days. During the first 10 days the fry feed on mucus secretion from the skin of the parents, henceforth—on small plankton. The young are brownish. Water conditions: dGH to 12°, pH 6.0—7.2, temperatures 27 to 29°C, aeration, teplacement and filtration of water. Hybridization possible between different subspecies (brown, blue and green).
