Geophagus steindachneri (Steindachner’s Earth-E ater) inhabits waters of northern Columbia. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1978. The male is greenish-brown with blue sparkles. Has fatty bulge like a brownish-red cap on the head. The female is smaller, less colourful. Length, 8 to 14 cm. Omnivorous species. Sexually mature at 8 to 10 months. Spawning in pairs. Incubation period 12 to 14 days. Fecundity up to 120 eggs. The young are grey-green with dark spots. Feeding commences with small plankton. Water conditions: dGH to 20°, pH 6.5—7.5, temperatures 24 to 26° C, aeration, filtration.
