Trematocranus spec. “‘regani’’ (Lyre-Tailed Trematocranus) inhabits Lake Malawi. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1981. The male is violet-orange, lyrelike fins with wide cream-yellow edging. The female is smaller, bronze-grey with dark cross-stripes. Length, 6 to 14 cm. Food: 20% vegetable and 80% animal. Sexually mature at 10 to 12 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 70 eggs. Incubation period 17 to 21 days. Feeding commences with small plankton. The young are similar to the female in colour pattern. Water conditions are “the same as for Lake Malawi Cichlids. Hybridization possible with Aulonocara sp.
