Cichlasoma maculicauda (Black-Belt Cichlid) inhabits waters of Guatemala and Panama. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1981. The male is silver-blue. with dark spots and a wide vertical stripe in the middle of the body. The throat and the bottom of the belly are vine-red. The female is smaller and less colourful. Length, 15 to 30 cm. Live food of all kinds. Sexually mature at 14 to 18 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 300 to 1,000 eggs. Incubation period 3 to 4 days, in 4 to 5 days the fry start swimming and feeding on small plankton. The young are grey-brown with dark spots. Water conditions: dGH to 15°, pH 6.8—7.8, temperatures 22 to 26° C, aeration and filtration.
