Etroplus maculatus (Orange Chromide) inhabits the fresh and brackish waters of India and Sri Lanka. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1959. The male is greenish-yellow with body covered by rows of red spots. The female is silver-brown. Body bottom, ventral and partially anal fins are black in the excited state. An orangered form is known. Length, 5 to 8 cm. Food: vegetable and animal in equal correlation. Sexually mature at 10 to 12 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 200 eggs. In 8 to 9 days the fry begin to swim and feed on small plankton and partially on mucus secretion from the skin of the parents. The young are similar to the female in colour pattern. Water conditions: dGH 8—20°, pH 7.5—8.5, temperatures 24 to 28° C, aeration, filtration, salinity 3—5%.
