Cichlasoma meeki (Firemouth) inhabits watets of the northern part of the Yukatan Peninsula. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1958. The male is grey-green with multiple bluc sparkles covering his high body and fins. Gill covers and fold of skin
on the throat are red. The female is Smaller and less colourful. Length, 8 to.15 cm. Live food of all kinds. Sexually mature at 8 to 12 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 800 eggs. Incubation period 3 to 4 days; in 4 to § days the fry start swimming and feeding оп small plankton. The young are greyish-green with a dark spot on the side of the body. Water conditions: dGH to 20°, pH 6.8—7.8. temperatures 22 to 28° C, aeration and filtration. Hybridization possible with C. nlgrofasciatum. The species 15
subject to degeneration as ua result of prolonged inbreeding.
