Aequidens species (Turquoise Acara) inhabits watets of Columbia and Venezuela. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1980. The male is grey-yellow, the body and the fins are covered with blue-green sparkles. Fin ends have a wide cream-orange border. The female is smaller and less colourful. Length, 10 to 15 cm. Live food of all kinds. Sexually mature at 10 to 12 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 700 eggs. In 8 to 10 days the fry start swimming and feeding on small plankton. The young are grey with dark strokes. Water conditions: dGH to 20°, pH 6.5—7.8, temperatures 20 to 26° C, aeration and filtration. The species is close to A. rivulatus and A. pulcher.
