Pseudotropheus spec. ‘‘newsi’’ (Yellow-Blue Pseudotropheus) inhabits Lake Malawi. Kept in the USSR by aquarists since 1979. The male is sky-blue, the female is yellow. Length, 5 to 10 cm. Food: 40% vegetable and 60% animal. Sexually mature at 9 to 11 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to 50 eggs. Incubation period 17 to 21 days. Feeding commences with small plankton.
The young are similar to the. female in colour pattern. Water conditions are the same as for Lake Malawi Cichlids (d4GH 8—20°, pH 7.2—8.5, temperatures 23 to 26° C, aeration, filtration). Joint maintenance with Ps. socolofi undesirable because of similarity in colour.
