Family Citharinids — (Citharinidae)
1. Inhabit the Congo basin and waters of Angola. Two very close genera Nannaethiops and Neolebias consist of about 10 species. Colouring is characterized by one or several longitudinal bands. Size up to 3 to 6 cm. Males more slender, brighter coloured. Food: Daphnia, Cyclops, etc. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 6 to 10 months. Spawning in pairs in soft water, DH 3—6°, pH 6—4.53. temperature 25 to 26°C. Average fecundity 150 eggs. Incubation period 30 to 36 hours. Feeding commences with rotifers, etc. Close genera: Congocharax and Dundocharax.
2. Inhabit the Congo basin. The genus Distichodus consists of over 20 species. Golden colouring with dark cross-bars, fins reddish. Size up to 30 cm. Vegetable food. Care as for all Characoids. Breeding not studied. Close genus — Paradistichodus.
