Inhabit the waters of Guiana, and some biotopes of the Amazon basin. Representatives of the family Crenuchidae differ in specific organ on top of their head; its function is not known. Only three species of this family are described (size up to 5 cm). Family South American "'Darters" consist of more than 50 species of small (up to 10 cm) bottom-dwellers. Exodon is a monotypic genus of Characins. It can be distinguished by two round black spots in the middle of the body and on the caudal peduncle. Be careful when catching—these fishes have a painful bite. Care as for all Characoids. Captive breeding is possible, but not studied enough and is haphazard.
