1. Inhabit the waters of Brazil, West Colombia. Subfamily Bocachicos (Prochilodinae) consists of more than 25 species reaching a fairly large size (up to 30—45 cm). Indian tribes use them as food. Caudal fin of Bocachicos is patterned with dark longitudinal bars. Food: 80% vegetable and 20% animal. Breeding not studied. The fishes migrating for considerable distances in nature.

2. Inhabit the waters of Bolivia and Paraguay. Body deep and compressed, main colour silvery-grey. There are two dark transverse bars on the forepart of the body. The dorsal and anal fins, as well as the base of the caudal fin, are also dark
(almost black in juveniles). The fishes are hardy and easy to breed. Fecundity up to 1,000 eggs. A close species, Gymnocorymbus socolofi, has no dark bars.
