Family Characins — (Characidae)
1. Diamond Tetras are found in the waters of Brazil, Venezuela, Paraguay, etc. The genus is divided into three groups consisting of about 40 species of silvery fishes. Size up to 6—7 cm. Females bulkier, while males of M. pittieri have elongated dorsal fin. Live food of suitable size. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 6 to 10 months. Spawning in pairs. Fecundity up to several hundred eggs. Incubation period 1—2 days for M. sanctaefilomenae, 2—3—for Diamond Tetras. Juveniles can be easily fed with small plankton.
2. Inhabit the waters of West Colombia. The genus Nematobrycon consists of 2 species. Size up to 5 cm. Females smaller and bulkier; males have filaments on dorsal and caudal fins. Care as for all Characoids. Spawning in pairs at 27 to 28°C. Incubation period 24—36 hours. Feeding of juveniles not difficult. Close species—Inpaichthys kerri (at the bottom on lower photo).
