Family Pencilfishes and Pyrrhulinins — (Lebiasinidae)
Inhabit the waters of Surinam, Brazil (middle Amazon, Rio Negro, Mato Grosso, etc). Colouring of all Pencilfishes is golden (to red) with one or several dark longitudinal bars, except for N. espei (Barred Pencilfish), which possesses cross ranges of spots-stripes. Males more slender, brighter coloured. Size up to 5—6.5 cm. Food: Cyclops, small Daphnia, etc. Care as for all Characoids. Sexually mature at 6 to 10 months. Spawning in pairs in soft slightly acid water. DH 2°, pH 6.0—6.4, temperature 28 to 30°C. Fecundity rather low, usually 20—-50 eggs. Incubation period 1—3 days. Feeding commences with smallest, carefully sifted plankton.
