Family Pacus, Silver Dollars and Piranhas (Serrasalmidae)
Inhabit the subtropical and tropical waters of America. The family may be classified into three groups according to feeding habits: vegetarian (7 genera—Collosoma, Metynnis, Myleus, etc.); active predators, i.e. True Piranhas (genus Serrasalmus, divided into 5 subgenera) and finally semiparasites—Scale-eaters or Wimple Piranhas (genus Catoprion with single species C. mento feeding mainly upon scales of other fishes). In captivity Piranhas grow up to 30 cm, and should be fed with fish and meat. They can be dangerous, especially to children, owing to their sharp teeth and unstable temperament. Silver Dollars are half their size, feeding upon vegetable matter (cabbage and lettuce are obligatory). Care as for all Characoids. For breeding purposes, spawners must be selected from a school of juveniles. Fecundity 1,000 eggs and more. Feeding of fry not difficult.
