FOLK COSTUME OF THE KAPSAI WOMEN
The holiday dress of the Kapsal women Is notable for its peculiar silhouette, interesting pattern, and rich palette. Preference is shown to saturated colours of deeper hue.
The gay-coloured apron matches harmoniously with the dark skirt in longitudinal stripes and the small-pattern bodice.
The blouse is made of thin white linen. The sleeve ends, the front, the Shoulders, and the collar are broidered with white thread.
The gathered skirt is very full, with longitudinal stripes, and a small plain-woven pattern.
The "kiklikas" (bodice) is made of cloth with transverse stripes. It is high, tight-fitting at the waist (the cut is shown in the drawing). The fastening consists of cloth-covered buttons.
The apron is decorative. On a gray ground one sees transverse stripes consisting of black streaks and small checks of contrasting colours. Between the stripes coloured rosaces of conventionalized lilies are distributed.
The crown-like ,,pakalké“ is a head-dress peculiar to the Kapsai women. It consists of a ribbon wound on a cardboard hoop and bordered with light-coloured thread. At the back of the "pakalké" hang down two ribbons with fringed ends.
The shawl of white linen is adorned with an embroidered or woven pattern of red thread.
