FOLK COSTUME OF THE AUKŠTAIČIAI WOMEN
The national dress of the Aukštalčiai women is modest, light-coloured and harmonious. White predominates here more than in other Lithuanian costume.
The blouse is of white linen. Only the sleeve ends, and the shoulders are adorned with a pattern.
The skirt is woven with transverse stripes doubled at the hem. This double stripe finishes off the skirt harmoniously.
The "kiklikas" (bodice) adorned with a small pattern is short, with pointed skirtlets at the front. The bodice is bordered with a narrow band. It is laced at the front with a fine twine made of thread or with a string.
The apron is made of white linen in plain weave with rare transverse stripes of natural linen colour diversified by a small pattern of a part of the design. The lower edge of the apron is bordered with a white fringe.
The head-dress is made of a broad fillet each border of which is framed by coloured network. The ends of the fillet cross each other at the back of the head and hang down behind freely. At their crossing-point they are held by a flow of coloured ribbons.
The shawl is light-coloured, fringed.
