FOLK COSTUME OF THE WOMEN OF THE KLAIPEDA REGION
The holiday dress of the women of Klaipéda is original and interesting though it is not notable for abundance of colours. The decorativeness of the apparel as a whole is based on the contrast of its separate parts. The dark skirt and bodice contrast vividly with the white blouse and apron.
The blouse is made of thin white linen. A broad belt in a picked design ("rinktinis") adornes the sleeves below the shoulders. The blouse is without a collar, the neck is low-cut, gathered, and decorated with fine plaiting. Fine plaiting decorates the lower part of the sleeves too.
The skirt is made of chequered stuff with predominant transverse stripes.
The "kiklikas" (a kind of Sleeve-less bodice) of smalil-pattern fabric is short, with a wide neck-cut and white frilling along the edge. The bodice js fastened with decorative buttons made of cloth.
The apron is made of white material with a picked pattern in colours, aligned in transverse stripes. The hem of the apron shows a broad-pattern stripe.
The head is covered with a large kerchief, richly embroidered; with a frontlet over the forehead.
The shoulders are covered with a shawi of lightcoloured cloth.
