FOLK COSTUME OF THE WOMEN OF THE VILNIUS REGION
The holiday attire of the women of the Vilnius region is notable for special smartness, vividness of colour, and elaborate ornamentation.
The blouse is of fine lawn. The sleeves are decorated with an intricate design. The collar, the sleeve ends, and the front are bordered with lacing in simple design.
The skirt is chequered, with emphasized transverse stripes. These stripes are set off by transverse pattern bands. The skirt is pleated or gathered.
The "kiklikas" (bodice) is made of chequered cloth. Between the checks a design in stars is inserted. The neck of the bodice is broad with a triangular cut at the front where an inset of plain material is inserted. The shirtfront is crossed by four narrow bands that fasten the bodice with buttons.
The apron is made of cloth with transverse stripes in a two-colour pattern.
The head-dress is decorative, made of a narrow band of tissue that holds three rows of small triangles with lace borders. This chaplet is held at the back by two broad patterned bands.
The white shawl is adorned with patterned stripes and edged by a fringe.
