24. The greenery by Bastejkalns (Bastion Hill) on the banks of the City Canal was laid out under G. Kuphaldft, Director of Riga Gardens. Pulling down the Riga fortifications Bastejkalns was formed between 1857 and 1859 on the grounds of the former SmilsSu Bastions (the Sand Bastion) and it was planted with trees and shrubs. In 1898 an artificial brooklet, cascades and a fountain were installed here. This postcard has been manufactured in collage technique once widely applied. The figures of people in the foreground have been pasted on without regard to the rules of perspective.
