23. The City Canal — the former fortification moat, which girdled the city together with walls and bastions. This fortification system was built in the 16th century and perfected till the 18th century. The project for planting greenery along the Canal was worked out by A. Wendt, Director of City Gardens in Lubeck and it was realized and supplemented by G. Kuphaldt, Director of Riga Gardens. The planting of greenery was started simultaneously with the pulling down of the fortification walls (1857—1863).
