Family Characins — Characidae
Inhabit the waters of Brazil, Guiana, Peru. Main body colouring—pink (yellowish in Lemon Tetra). Largest species H. erythrostigma (up to 6 cm); bright scarlet spot on forepart of body. H. flammeus has two dark bars behind gill covers. Males more slender, brighter coloured. Males of H. bentosi and Bleeding-heart Tetra have elongated dorsal fin. Care and breeding as for Neon Tetras. H. flammeus are the easiest to breed, H. erythrostigma—the most difficult. Known hybrids are H. erythrostigma X H. callistus.
